The semi-ruggedized Panasonic Toughbook CF74 system is made for highly mobile people who are tired of replacing less-durable notebooks but want something that still looks, acts, and runs like a mainstream machine with real military look. At 5.9lbs it is light enough to carry around; the built-in handle folds neatly back into the chassis.
There are no large bumpers on the corners of CF74, and the sturdy magnesium-alloy case is as fashionable as it is functional, with a 13.3-inch display, which is relatively large for a semi-rugged system. The CF74 has the brightest notebook screen! When you are using a notebook outside, the strong ambient light can make it difficult to see the screen, but the ToughBook CF74 suffers no such issues.
With a closer look at the display, you can see some special capabilities such as the bezel is unusually thick (0.67 inches compared to the typical 0.5 inches), suggesting better-than-usual durability for this delicate sensitive, and expensive component. As expected for a notebook for the outdoors, the screen stands up quite well to direct sunlight, where ordinary LCDs would go black.
The keyboard looks good, the Synaptics touchpad works well, and the touchscreen does not require a stylus; you can use your finger. Of course, if you do want a stylus, Panasonic has supplied one, along with two storage sheaths, conveniently located on each side of the notebook. The CF-74's carrying handle is particularly useful, even for carrying the notebook short distances. The CF-74 can withstand drops from a height of 30in.
Some impressive components in the latest Toughbook CF 74 include a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor supported by a fast 1066-MHz front-side bus and the shock-mounted hard drive provides 160GB of storage space. Memory options in CF74, range from 1GB to 4GB. A good part of memory (128MB) is shared by the Intel 945GM integrated video accelerator. It is suggested to upgrade the memory to 2GB of RAM to better handle Windows Vista Premium. It comes with an impressive battery life of 5-7 hours. A DVD Super Multi Drive, WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, a 13.3-inch LCD display, integrated EV-DO and HSDPA supports, fingerprint sensor and Bluetooth are the other features of this toughbook.
