Outdoor Viewable Transflective LCDs…

In these images you can see three areas of the LCD sectioned off. This example shows how we implement the Outdoor Viewable Transflective option on our DURABOOK LCDs.

The top left corner is your standard, everyday LCD with Integrated Touch Screen and without the Outdoor Viewable Transflective option added. The bottom left corner shows the Transflective option with ntegrated Touch Screen. The entire right side of the LCD shows the Transflective LCD option alone. While indoors you can see all three sections perfectly, even with the three different types of technology in use.

While in direct sunlight you can see which sections respond better to the sunlight. The left corner being entirely washed out and the bottom left corner is visible, but not as clear and crisp as the right side of the LCD using just the Outdoor Viewable Transflective option.

Break It Down...

It is obvious that the market's demand for outdoor LCD applications is expanding, such as mobile Rugged Laptops, Rugged Tablets and Convertible Tablet, Rugged Handheld PDAs and In-Vehicle Solutions. However, a regular LCD has poor readability in outdoor environments. To provide a suitable solution, OC Rugged Laptops has partnered with a company that devoted years of R&D efforts in developing convenient, affordable, and efficient solutions for outdoor viewable LCD applications. The Outdoor Viewable Transflective technology is a patented LCD enhancement technology, which is developed based on knowledge in optics in addition to the learning and understanding of the optical properties of a LCD.

The enhancement is designed to equip a LCD with sufficient reflective function without compromising its original transmissive functions and features. With the imposed reflective function, the modified LCD can reflect the ambient light passing the LCD cell and utilize the reflected light beams as its illumination. The stronger the ambient light is, the brighter the LCD will appear as shown in Fig. 1 and 2. The Outdoor Viewable Transflective option also comes with improved optical characteristics such as, brightness, contrast ratio, viewing angle and color saturation for both indoor and outdoor viewing seen in Fig. 3 and 4. The superb optical quality of the Outdoor Viewable Transflective option is achieved without extra power consumption and excessive heat generation with no mechanical alteration necessary shown in Fig. 5.
