TDS Recon Rugged Handheld PDA
Now, TDS has come forward with the Recon Rugged Handheld PDA, the industry's first rugged Pocket PC which is claimed to meet consumer requirements with military specifications for durability. The top and bottom sides of this heavily reinforced machine have been molded with thick rubber caps to absorb impacts and vibrations. TDS Recon Rugged PDA features a deeply sunken screen with reinforced glass, all watertight seals and a yellow colored body from a specially stiffened plastic.
These worthwhile modifications do add to the size and weight of the Recon, and at 165 x 95 x 45mm (WxHxD) and 490g, it is much larger than a standard Pocket PC. Still, the device fits comfortably in hand and not overly weighty.
In terms of specifications, Recon comes in two flavors, the first running a 200MHz Intel XScale processor with 64MB of internal non-volatile Flash storage, and the second an upgraded 400MHz Intel XScale processor version with 128MB of storage. Both are high-performance processors. Beyond the primary difference in the processors, both the machines are exactly the similar. Each has two CompactFlash slots, a 3.5-inch color TFT display that runs at the standard Pocket PC resolution of 240 x 320. The CF-Cap O-ring seal ensures protection for the two CompactFlash slots from wind, dust and rain. The two CompactFlash slots support multiple accessories including qualified memory and Bluetooth cards, Wlan, GPS, RFID, Barcode Scanners, etc.
You can view the screen under direct sunlight which is a highly desirable feature with a field device like this. Power comes from a strong 3800 mAh battery in a rechargeable boot module with serial, USB and power connectors on the bottom and a long battery life of up to 15 hours. Both versions run the latest version of Windows Mobile 2003.
The other cherished features of TDS Recon Rugged Handheld PDA include the ability to operate in a wider temperature range of -30 to 60 degrees C, and at altitudes of 15,000 feet. It can withstand 26 consecutive drops from over four feet, and complete immersion in water to a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes.
Now, you don't have to be scared of an unintended drop of your Recon can bear such abuse.
